I haven't used cloning apps in over 15 years as they are just not needed any more on Mac'sĪs far as your Fusion Drive blade SSD it is a cache drive to your HDD, it is not holding anything that your HDD doesn't have.

Diring the install it will ask you if you have a backup to restore at which point you plug in your TimeMachine drive and restore your stuff!ĭon't use cloning apps as they don't work with the newer APFS drives and often times your disk has a corruption or two which would be copied over unlike the TimeMachine restore. That way I can then just boot up under it to prep my drives using Disk Utility and then run the OS installer on the Aura Pro X2 blade SSD (the boot drive).
When you restart you'll need to run the Internet recovery services or what I prefer is to first setup a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive with the macOS I want to use. Then pull the drives and put in your new ones. Michael, Just use TimeMachine to make a backup to an external drive.
So I can only encourage anyone who is unsure. Tests with Black Magic showed a write speed of 2250 MB/s and a read speed of 2920 MB/s. The speed compared to the Fusion Drive is immense.

I don't know why OWC calls the upgrade kit incompatible for the iMac Late 2015. Sticking the display took about 30min, and you have to be extra careful.įour hands would probably be better, but it also works with two. Even Hibernation Mode, and the fan ran quietly. I installed MacOS Big Sur, played the backup and tested the whole system first. I guess the thermal sensor is no longer necessary since 2015, but it was included, so to be safe, I installed it. Including the installation of the new SATA SSD, it took about 45 min to assemble without the display. The Aura Pro X2 Flash SSD fit right out of the box. I used a brush and an air compressor to clean the individual parts once the iMac was open. It took about an hour to disassemble all the components. While waiting for the package, I backed up my data and splitted the Fusion Drive.įor the upgrade, I studied various YouTube videos and the one from OWC. I ordered two upgrade kits from OWC to refresh both drives. But I can say in advance, it was worth it. I have never done such a procedure before. I have an iMac Late 2015 (17,1) 27" 5K A1419 EMC2834 with 1TB Fusion Drive, which means 1TB HDD via SATA and 24GB via PCIe. Here's an infomation for those who are still unsure if they should upgrade.
